Ann Cain was born and raised in Yarmouth. After high school she studied art at the Mount Allison Museum School and also at the Nova Scotia College of Art. For many years after that she did not paint at all. She worked as an illustrator for a time at the Fortress reconstruction at Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. After she had children, she became certified to be an administrator in early childhood facilities. At that time, teaching children was what interested her the most. In the mid-1990s she spend a week in New York, spending most of her time in art galleries. Her passion for painting was suddenly back. She has been painting ever since. Painting is not work for her but one of her greatest pleasures.
